StuffIt Lite provides a general purpose facility for segmenting large files into parts (segments). You may want to do this in order to fit a large file from a hard disk onto floppies or to send a large file in chunks over a communications link. You can segment any type of file regardless if it is a StuffIt archive or a large database document.
Begin by finding the “Segmenting” Translator in the Translate menu. It contains a sub-menu item called “Segment…”. Choose it. Prior to selecting a file to be segmented, use the pop-up menu at the bottom to specify the size of the segments. If you do not wish to split the file into pieces that will fit onto a specified diskette (single-sided, double-sided, or high density), choose “Other…” from this pop-up menu. When choosing “Other…”, you will be able to choose a segment size from 1K to 3000K. You may also select “Maximum Possible” from the pop-up menu if you wish to make each segment as large as possible on each disk that the file is segmented to.
After you have selected a segment size, select the file and click the ΓÇ£SegmentΓÇ¥ button. For each segment of the file, you will be prompted for the name and location of where to save that segment. If you want the segments on multiple diskettes, insert a diskette each time you are asked for where to save a new segment. After the final segment is saved, the segment operation will be complete.
If you wish to restore a segmented file, you must join the segments. You must have all the segments to be able to recreate the original file. Select the “Join…” sub-menu item of the “Segmenting…” Translator. You will be asked to find the first segment. Tell StuffIt Lite where the segment is (insert the diskette if it’s there) and click the “Join” button. You will be asked to find each of the other segments in sequence. When the join is complete, you will have the original file.
